April 7, 2008 -- NanoBioMagnetics (NBMI), a company focused on applying designed structures of magnetically responsive nanoparticles, has secured its first U.S. Patent. Titled "Method and Apparatus for Improving Hearing," it is based on the use of magnetically responsive nanoparticles implanted in the organs of the middle ear to drive tissue vibrations in the amplification of sound. The technology claims a first in being able to demonstrate the nanomechanical movement of tissue. The Oklahoma-based company says it developed and validated the technology beginning in 2002 and is now focused on commercialization partnerships.
NBMI hopes its technology will enable hearing aid systems to become smaller and to become totally implantable. Charles Seeney, CEO and founder of NBMI and co-inventor of the technology, says, "miniaturization of hearing devices through ever smaller electronic components is part of an emerging trend based on applying nanotechnology to human healthcare needs."
The company is developing a companion technology, based on the targeted delivery of bioactive materials to the inner ear.
